My mind, however, isn’t on my current mission. I can’t help it. That phone call Asher took while we questioned Max shook both him and Weston. When I walked back into the room with them, they were arguing over something and immediately stopped when my presence was revealed.
I couldn’t understand their low murmurs, but I get the feeling it was something about Everett. Nix wanted me with him to escort Max so I couldn’t dig deeper or contact Ares myself. Now, I’m left fucking wondering and distracted.
“Would you just fucking call her already?” Nix grumps.
“I can’t.” It’s the coward’s way. I need to see her. To explain in person what a dipshit I am. I have to be able to get on my knees and grovel at her feet while begging forgiveness. Not act like some high school boy and text her. Calling isn’t good enough, either.
“Text her, call her, whatever, but get your fucking head in the game, Chaos, or I’ll remove you from active duty on the team.” His threat sobers me, and I pull out my phone.
I stare at the blank text screen for so long, he rips it out of my hand and begins typing.
“What the hell are you doing?” I reach for it, but he’s already hit send. If he ruins everything, I’ll fucking blow his big ass up before we land.
I stare blankly as I read what he wrote.
Foster: I’m sorry, I was an idiot who doesn’t deserve to be anywhere near you. I love you.
That’s not what I expected. Also, not how I planned to tell her.

The fucking bubbles show that she’s typing, and then they disappear before they pop up and disappear five more times. What I get, in the end, breaks my heart.
